Esther 2 and 3 “Safe Strangers”

Intro: Real danger and Real Safety

1) “Respectable” Sin

Sin and Satan are real and deadly

2 disgusting plans;

  • Perverted plan (2 v 1-4)

  • Bloodthirsty plan (3 v 8-11)

Obvious sin dressed up in respectable clothes – how should we respond?

2) Camouflaged Saints?

What did people see when they looked at Mordecai?

“Now there was in the citadel of Susa a Jew of the tribe of Benjamin, named Mordecai son of Jair, the Son of Shemei, the son of Kish.”

Promising introduction but disappointing reality - God isn’t mentioned at all in the book of Esther.

Mordecai the magnolia;

  • V10  “Esther had not revealed her background, because Mordecai had forbidden her to do so”
  • v20 “Esther had kept secret her family background and nationality just as Mordecai had told her to do”

When you look at Mordecai and Esther in chapter 2 you see …. Susa.

What do people see when they look at us?

We are not to be camouflaged saints – camouflaged saints are in great danger.

3) Almighty God

The righteous God who may seem absent is actually powerfully and decisively present;

  • Amidst all the filthiness of chapter 2, God is at work

We are utterly free to live boldly for him amidst great opposition and in the end, everything will be fine.

  • Amidst the satanic violence of chapter 3, God is at work

God worked to set Mordecai’s heart on fire and everything is ready for a rescue plan to put in place.

1) What sins in our culture are currently dressed up in respectable clothes?
2) Why do you think God is not mentioned in the book of Esther?
3) In what ways are Christians tempted to hide in the world?
4) What do people see when they look at your life and our church life?
5) Give different reasons from the passage and sermon why Christians should live boldly and differently in this world.
6) What state is your heart in right now? Is it on fire for God and his glory?
