Introduction: the power of shame and the problems Timothy faced.
The claim of 'resurrection now'
1. Share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God, verses 6 to 8
- fan into flame the gift of the Spirit
- the key verse and the call of the letter, verse 8.
- the call of Jesus
- do you believe in the Holy Spirit?
2. The glorious gospel of our gracious God, verses 9-10
- fighting our shame with the love of God
- Loved before time began
- Love brought into your life through the gospel
- the gospel that brings immortality to light
- Election: a doctrine for our daily life
3. Who can guard you to the end, verses 11 and 12
- a tricky verse, verse 12
- Knowing God in Christ is our confidence
- Our heart response?
‘do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord or Paul his prisoner but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God’.
Questions:
When are you tempted to feel ashamed?
What strikes you about how awful life and church was in New Testament times? Do we romanticise the early days?
Why was Timothy to fan his gift into flame - verses 5 and 7? What was his gift?
What is the central command of the whole letter?
Where do you see people ashamed of the Lord AND Paul today?
What most amazes you about verses 9 and 10?
How is election a doctrine for daily life?
Pray in verses 9 to 10!
Why are verses 11 and 12 such good news? How do they encourage you?
Why am I ashamed - what's my problem? Pray about this.
